The ESAM5400 and ESAM5500 fully automatic espresso makers have an alarm that advice when is time to change the filter. However these two models does not come with water filter nor have the capability to accept the water filter. In order to clear the "change filter" alarm please go into the Menu serttings and disable the water filter function.
ESAM5400
1) Press P button to enter the menu
2) Turn the selction knob until the
lights come on
3) Press the 
button: the lights stops flashing 
to indicate theat the filter is not present. The ESC light come on and the OK light flashes;
4) Press the ESC button twice to exit the menu
If you unplug the unit the change will be erase and the "change filter" alarm will eventually come up again
